Taxonomy
Understand how Daloopa standardizes financial data across companies through metric taxonomy and sector classification
What is Taxonomy?
Taxonomy is Daloopa's standardized mapping layer that identifies and links equivalent financial metrics across different companies. Each company reports its own series names, so the same underlying concept can appear under dozens of different labels. Taxonomy resolves those variations into a single canonical metric, making cross-company comparison possible at scale.
It's built from two mappings that work together:
- Metric Taxonomy — groups equivalent metrics (e.g., every company's version of "cost of revenue") under a single canonical metric, regardless of how each company labels its own series.
- Sector Classification — groups tickers into comparable sets, at a finer grain than sector alone (sector → industry → company). For multi-segment companies, classification looks at revenue segments rather than the ticker as a whole, so a conglomerate is grouped by the sector its dominant segment actually competes in, instead of one catch-all label.
Sector classification is the foundation metric taxonomy is built on: a metric is only meaningfully "the same" once you know which companies belong in the same comparison set — that's also why the industry template hierarchy below is rooted in Sector and Industry before it gets to metrics.
The problem it solves: being able to compare a metric across peers is what lets an analyst apply signal from companies that have already reported to ones that haven't yet, and read relative valuation across a peer group. But manually creating and maintaining that mapping across hundreds of companies is slow and error-prone — and it's not just a data-entry problem: while standardized GAAP metrics simplify some comparisons, most sector- and company-specific KPIs have no uniform definition to begin with, so mapping them requires bespoke, ongoing judgment calls, not a one-time lookup.
Who it serves. Analysts get streamlined cross-company comparisons inside Daloopa's product suite; API consumers get a stable set of metric identifiers instead of raw, company-specific series names; and MCP/LLM users get faster, more consistent metric comparisons out of chatbot and agent workflows, since the model has a fixed canonical structure to compare against instead of having to infer equivalence from inconsistent raw labels itself.
